THE IMPORTANCE OF SPATIAL PLANNING

A BESPOKE HOME

Spatial planning is the quiet powerhouse behind every well-functioning and beautifully designed home. As an interior designer, I’ve found that even the most stunning finishes can fall flat if the underlying layout doesn’t support daily life. That’s why I often start with practicality—thinking through how a space actually works for the people living in it. How many doors do you need to open to get from the laundry basket to the washing machine? Where does the family naturally gather, and how many people need to sit comfortably in that space? These may seem like small details, but they are the foundation of a home that feels intuitive and effortless to live in.

Once the functional layout is resolved, there’s a natural progression into aesthetics. With the bones in the right place, you can start to refine—introducing symmetry, enhancing sightlines between rooms, or repositioning a doorway to create a more impactful view. Lighting, too, becomes more than just practical—it’s a decorative tool that can define zones, highlight architectural features, or simply bring warmth and character to a room.

I’m passionate about maximising space within an existing or proposed footprint.  I find the process of tweaking and refining a floorplan endlessly rewarding. Some of the most complex layouts reveal surprisingly simple solutions when put into drawing software and viewed with fresh eyes. It’s often in these early stages that furniture layout becomes crucial—not just for visualising how the space will feel, but for resolving details such as plug socket locations, how storage can be integrated seamlessly, and how to make the most of views and natural light.

In the end, spatial planning is about more than just making things fit. It’s about shaping how people move through their homes, how they interact with their surroundings, and how a space can enhance their everyday lives. Thoughtful planning lays the groundwork for a home that not only looks beautiful but lives beautifully too.

Katherine has incredible creativity and vision when it comes to spatial planning and layouts . She transformed the downstairs of our home from a series of disjointed rooms into a harmonious space which now flows so well and has much more utility for the needs of our large family
